This T cell development lecture explains about the T cell maturation and differentiation pathway. In addition to cell cycle proteins, cytokines and their receptors are produced following antigen activation of T cells. These are involved in the expansion and further differentiation of the T cells into memory and effector cells. IL-2 is an autocrine factor which leads to T cell proliferation. Other surface molecules induced following activation include CD40L (CD154) which interacts with CD40 on dendritic cells inducing them to produce cytokines (e.g. IL-12) required for T cell proliferation and differentiation into Th1 cells. This leads to the specific T cell priming and clonal expansion necessary for their effector function and the development of memory.
